Came across the discharge of Morgan Meeks among the Republic of Texas claims at the archive. He served from July 12 to October 12, 1841 in Company D, Captain William M. Williams’ Volunteers. The claim, payment of $75, was paid June 18, 1852.

I had heard of this site and had to check it out. I am a decendant of Suddeth Meeks. My Grandfather was Alonzo Alden Meeks (Lon). My Father was Lon Baker Meeks. I live in Carlsbad New Mexico Now but grew up in Wimberley and San Marcos Texas. I am wanting to search for more of our history, please give me advise. Thank You. David R. Meeks
Hi David,
The Meeks family is quite large. I came by the info I have as I was researching my Mayes family. I found that whenever I came across a Mayes there was usually a Meeks nearby (or vice versa). Most people start with the census. Is this your grandfather’s family on the 1930 census in Hays County?

Lon B born in NM, everyone else seems to have been born in TX.
I have come across more than one Alonzo, Meeks and Mayes. Seems to have been a family name.
They are on the 1920 census as well but not 1910. They must have been in NM in 1910. Email me at gen5tex [at] austin [dot] rr [dot] com as I have a lot of info and would like to find the direct link.

I came a cross your blog and found it so interesting. I too am researching my Meeks and Mayes family. Have you ever found any information on James(Jim) Clemens Lock and Amanda Mayes. She was the daughter of John & Elizabeth. Jim and Amanda’s son Barton Clemens Lock was my grandfather’s grandfather. Barton married Julia Ann Cruz, Katie Lee Cruiz’s sister. Katie married William Mayes in 1868.
Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Suzi,
Unfortunately I don’t yet have any specific info on Amanda Mayes. I’m glad you emailed me because John and Elizabeth’s three older daughters present something of a problem. The 1840 census suggests that John and Elizabeth had three girls between 1825 and 1840. In 1840 the enumerator just wrote down the name of the head of household and used tick marks to indicate how many family members were in each category (maybe you already know this) Categories were broken down by sex and age. No names were listed for the dependents. I have been driving myself crazy trying to figure out how to place the older girls. It looks like your Amanda is one of them. I know she isn’t listed in the early marriage records of Travis and Hayes counties. Might she have been married in Arkansas? There are a lot of Locks in the Hayes County cemetery transcription though I don’t see James or Amanda. Do you know where they are buried? I am so glad to have a lead.
Ok, James Lock died and Amanda married Isaac Slover. The Slover’s have a family history book and it states that Amanda is the widow of James Lock and the daughter of John Mays and Elizabeth Meeks. Amanda was born in Sedelia Missouri.
Elizabeth Meek’s father was Sudderth Meeks and her mother was Winny Anne Smoot. What an interesting family the Smoot’s are. There is a lot of info on them.
I believe Amanda is buried in Leakey.
